QWERTY: The Second Annual Festival of Type and the Letter Arts to be Held at The Greenville Drive-In June 23 & 24



[GREENVILLE, NY] -- QWERTY: The Second Annual Festival of Type and the Letter Arts will be held at the Greenville Drive-In on June 23-24th and features a return performance by the enigmatic rhythm and words ensemble, the Boston Typewriter Orchestra. The festival begins on World Typewriter Day Friday with a line-up including a special live performance by Brian Dewan and a 10th anniversary screening of Gary Hustwit’s documentary Helvetica. Boston Typewriter Orchestra takes the stage Saturday evening before screenings of Ink & Paper and Doug Nichol’s new documentary California Typewriter featuring Tom Hanks, John Mayer and Sam Shepard. Both evenings will host a gathering of typewriter poets, typewriter and letter art and a type-in hosted by Erik Molbach. Bring your typewriter or use one of the free typewriters provided on a first-come first-served basis. The Greenville Drive-In is located at 10700 Route 32 in Greenville NY 12083.

Typewriter-Themed Art Exhibit in the Snack Bar

The Greenville Drive-In hosts typewriter inspired artwork and multimedia projects at the snack bar throughout the weekend.


7:00pm Cocktails in the Projectionists Club Biergarten

Raise a glass to celebrate National Typewriter Day; the anniversary of the granting of the U.S. patent to Christopher Latham Sholes in 1868. The Projectionsts Club offers a selection of unique cocktails to enjoy and featured local wine, spirits and beer.


7:45 - 8:45pm Live Music in the Projectionists Club Biergarten with Brian Dewan

Brian Dewan is an artist who works in many media, including art, music, audio-visual performances, decorative painting, furniture design, poetry and musical instrument design. He has produced four albums of songs and concertized extensively as a solo artist, as well as having performed in various collaborations and as a sideman. His musical releases include: Tells The Story, The Operating Theater, Words Of Wisdom, and Ringing At The Speed Of Prayer. Dewan lives in Catskill, New York. briandewan.com


9:00-10:15pm 10th Anniversary Screening of “Helvetica”

This 2007 documentary by Gary Huswit explores typography, graphic design and global visual culture.  Helvetica looks at the proliferation of one typeface as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.

3:30 - 6:30pm  Projectionists Club Biergarten type-in hosted by Erik Molbach

Erik shares a portion of his typewriter collection for poetry, letter or other writing and is available to answer questions and share his experience with collecting and repairing typewriters.  Bringing in your own typewriter is strongly encouraged.


Remote Post Office Site

The USPS will set up a remote mailing station so you can type a letter and send it from the Greenville Drive-In.


4:00 - 6:30 pm On-Demand typewriter poetry

Typewriter poets will be available to create unique poetry as you listen to the click clack of the keys.


7:00-8:30pm Live performance with The Boston Typewriter Orchestra

A collective endeavor which engages in rhythmic typewriter manipulation combined with elements of performance, comedy and satire. 9:00-10:45pm Screening of “California Typewriter”

California Typewriter by director Doug Nichol, is a story about people whose lives are connected by typewriters. The film is a meditation on creativity and technology featuring Tom Hanks, John Mayer, Sam Shepard, David McCullough and others.
